Crossbow-Wielding Man Shot Dead by Armed Police in Rotherhithe

A man brandishing a crossbow and wearing a gas mask was shot dead by armed police in a chilling South-East London showdown. The victim, 30-year-old Bryce Hodgson, broke into a house in Rotherhithe before the dramatic police intervention.

Stalking History and Court Orders

Hodgson had a disturbing past. He was under a strict five-year restraining order for stalking, which barred him from contacting or approaching the victim’s home until 2028. The order came after he entered a woman’s bedroom without consent and sent harassing messages, including explicit fantasies.

He was also ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and follow 12 months of supervision. A separate breach of bail charge was dropped by prosecutors.

Police Confrontation Ends in Fatal Shooting

Unarmed officers first tried to calm the situation. But when it escalated, armed marksmen arrived and opened fire, killing Hodgson at the scene despite attempts to save him. Two bystanders suffered minor injuries but will recover.

The aftermath left behind a grim scene: Hodgson’s gas mask, body armour, crossbow bolts, and military boots scattered across the quiet cul-de-sac.

Investigation and Community Reaction

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation. Bodycam footage shows Hodgson threatening people before police fired. Neighbours described him as a “troubled and haunted individual” who appeared constantly stressed.

Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist praised the officers’ bravery, saying their swift response “prevented further loss of life” and kept others safe.

A post-mortem will determine the exact cause of death. Fatal police shootings remain extremely rare in the UK, with fewer than three per year since 2017.
