Triple Killer Who Fled to Bangladesh Jailed for 40 Years
Mohammed Abdul Shakur has been locked up for a minimum of 40 years after murdering his wife and two young daughters, then fleeing the country.
Brutal Triple Murder and Daring Escape
In December 2006, Mohammed Abdul Shakur, 46, savagely killed his wife Juli Begum, 26, and their two daughters, Anika, 5, and Thanha, 6, at their family home.
Immediately after the killings, Shakur vanished. He caught a flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh, with a quick stop in Calcutta. Flight and phone records confirmed his arrival abroad.
Years on the Run in South Asia
For years, Shakur was a ghost. Police hunted him across borders. He was spotted near the India-Bangladesh border, and local authorities were tipped off.
In May 2013, the breakthrough came. Shakur was arrested in India for illegal entry. He had been shuttling between countries for work, evading capture.
Extradition and Justice at Last
It took until April 2019 before extradition was finalised. Shakur was flown back to the UK and charged with three counts of murder.
He refused to comment at his arrest but will now spend at least 40 years behind bars.
Family Speaks Out
“Abdul Shakur destroyed our family,” said Juli’s relatives. “He stole a loving mother, sister, and the future of two beautiful children. We miss them every day and cannot forgive this senseless loss.”
“His cowardice in fleeing meant justice was delayed. Our mother never saw that justice.”
Detective Thanks International Allies
Detective Sergeant Amjad Sharif said, “This case has been traumatic and protracted. It’s hard to fathom what drove Shakur to such violence.”
“Thanks to our colleagues in Bangladesh and India, plus the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we finally caught him. This is a prime example of international cooperation bringing killers to justice.”
“Now Shakur will pay for his horrific crimes.”
