A double-decker bus slammed into the Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct on Barton Lane, ripping the roof off its top deck and flinging a passenger clear of the vehicle. The terrifying crash left 20 people injured, sparking a major emergency response.

Serious Injuries as Victims Rushed to Hospital

Among the injured, a 19-year-old woman and two men aged 20 and 40 suffered serious wounds. Emergency crews scrambled to the scene with 123 responders, including ambulances and two air ambulances. Passengers were triaged and treated at the roadside before being taken to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

Probe Launched Into Why Bus Tried to Pass Under Low Bridge

Transport for Greater Manchester and Stagecoach are teaming up with Greater Manchester Police to uncover how the double-decker managed to hit the aqueduct, despite clear height restriction signs.

“Our absolute focus has been on supporting emergency services. A full investigation is underway to determine exactly what went wrong. We are grateful for the swift response from all emergency teams,” said Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester.
