Convicted murderer and ex-drug dealer Marlon Kelly dead in jail

Marlon Kelly, 46, has died behind bars after serving 14 years of a life sentence for murdering his friend in South London. Kelly was locked up at HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey when he passed away on 13 June 2025, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) confirmed. The cause of death remains under wraps.

Life Sentence for Brutal Killing of Best Friend

Kelly was found guilty of the 2010 murder of 31-year-old Anthony Gray, a man he once dubbed his “best friend.” A jury convicted him in 2011 after hearing how Kelly stabbed Gray in the neck during a drug dispute. He then tried to flee to Wales with £2,500 in cash.

The judge slammed Kelly as an “abomination to society” and sentenced him to life with a minimum 25-year term. Kelly wasn’t due for parole consideration until 2036.

Violent History and Failed Deportation Bid

Originally from Jamaica and known on the streets as “Wrecker,” Kelly had a violent past. At 18, he made headlines after a 2001 Battersea shooting. Witnesses saw him fire a handgun at a fleeing man. He was convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to cause violence and served six years.

After prison, UK Border Agency efforts to deport Kelly failed on appeal, letting him stay in South London—where he later killed Gray.

Victim’s Family Speaks Out

“It was hurtful beyond belief to hear him call my son his best friend. Sitting through the trial showed me just how heartless he truly was,” said Anthony Gray’s mother, Hermine Caeser.

Prison Service Launches Probe

An official investigation into Kelly’s death is now underway by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. HMP Swaleside has yet to release a statement.
