Motorcycle Hit-and-Run Caught After Rider’s Lies Unravel
Police were called to a crash on South Farm Road around 11pm on February 9 involving a Mercedes and a Honda CBR 125. The biker, who had a pillion passenger, fled without leaving any details.
Rider Denies Involvement Despite Injuries and Witnesses
Officers tracked down George Argent, 18, of Tower Road, Lancing, the registered owner of the bike. He denied riding the motorcycle at the time, even though he had a visible injury and multiple witnesses saw him at the scene.
Witnesses saw Argent leave the area and later identified him during an identity parade. Despite the evidence, he stuck to his story of innocence.
Phone Messages Blow His Story Apart
Police seized Argent’s phone and found messages where he admitted being the rider. Confronted with the truth, he still refused to come clean.
Charged and Sentenced for Hit-and-Run and Deception
- Perverting the course of justice
- Driving without due care and attention
- Driving without a valid licence
- Failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision
Argent pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court on November 8. He received a 22-week suspended prison sentence, 120 hours unpaid work, 15 rehab sessions, and a one-year driving ban.
PC Thomas Van Der Wee said: “Argent went to great lengths to avoid prosecution for leaving the scene. We had to check his claims, arrange an identity parade, and analyse his phone. This case shows our determination to catch anti-social riders and that those who lie to police and courts will be caught.”
