Deadly Crash on A588 Shard Road
A man has been sentenced for causing the death of a 78-year-old motorcyclist in a collision on the A588 Shard Road in Hambleton. Antony Whitaker, 78, pleaded guilty to the charge in a recent hearing.
The crash happened at around 3pm on 25th June 2022. Whitaker, then 77, had parked his Volkswagen Touran in an entrance near Shard Bridge. About 40 minutes later, he pulled back onto the road, making almost a U-turn right across the path of motorcyclist Mark Butterworth, leaving the rider with no chance to avoid a smash.

Mark Butterworth was rushed to hospital after the collision, but he sadly died from his injuries. Tributes have poured in for Mark, a beloved husband and celebrated motorcycle racer.
Racing Legend Lost
Mark retired from competitive racing at 74, after a long and distinguished career. He was well-known across the UK motorcycling community and had competed in prestigious events like the Isle of Man TT.
Whitaker Sentenced and Must Retake Driving Test
Following a thorough investigation, Whitaker was sentenced to 18 months and must pass an extended driving retest before regaining his licence.
