Trial Collapses in Teen’s Tottenham Murder Case
The trial of Marcus La Croix, accused of killing 17-year-old Tanesha Melbourne-Blake in a shocking Easter Monday drive-by shooting, has collapsed nearly seven years after the tragic crime.
Tanesha Fatally Shot in Tottenham
Tanesha was gunned down while standing with friends on Chalgrove Road, Tottenham, on April 2, 2018. A car pulled up and an occupant opened fire. She died instantly from a single gunshot wound, sparking public outrage and renewed calls to tackle London’s violent youth crime.
Trial Halted Amid Evidence Concerns
Marcus La Croix, 37, from Hackney, who was charged with murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, allegedly confessed to the killing while behind bars.
However, his trial at the Old Bailey was abruptly stopped on Thursday. Judge Mark Dennis KC discharged the jury after serious questions emerged over police handling of a key witness’s statement—the inmate who claimed La Croix admitted the shooting.
“Issues had arisen that needed to be bottomed out,” said Judge Dennis, explaining the collapse of the case.
What’s Next for Justice?
The Crown Prosecution Service will decide by June 20 whether to pursue a retrial. Meanwhile, La Croix denies all charges.
Tanesha’s death shocked Tottenham and the capital, becoming a stark emblem of rising gang violence. Hundreds attended vigils honoring her memory, with family describing her as a “beautiful soul” uninvolved in gang disputes.
Her community remains hopeful that justice will still be served.
