Eight Men Arrested in Devon After People Smuggling Attempt via Yacht

The National Crime Agency (NCA) is appealing for public help after eight men were arrested following a failed people smuggling attempt using a sailing yacht off the Devon coast.

Migrant Yacht ‘Timberwolf’ Spotted Near Mothecombe Beach

Investigators believe an organised crime gang brought several migrants across the Channel from France aboard a 30ft yacht named Timberwolf. The yacht was spotted moored just off Mothecombe Beach on Tuesday, 4 July.

Migrants were shuttled ashore in a dinghy and picked up in a black Mercedes 180. Devon and Cornwall Police swooped, arresting six men, aged 28 to 41, suspected of facilitating illegal migration in the vehicle seen leaving the area.

Captain and Crew Nabbed by Border Force at Plymouth

Border Force officers intercepted the yacht as it sailed towards Plymouth. They arrested a 24-year-old man from Putney and the boat’s 58-year-old captain from Devon, both on suspicion of facilitating illegal migration.

All eight men have been questioned by NCA and released on bail pending further investigation.

NCA Urges Witnesses to Come Forward with Information

NCA Branch Commander Matt Rivers said: “Tackling people smuggling is a priority for the National Crime Agency. This smuggling attempt was clearly orchestrated by an organised crime group. These criminals exploit vulnerable people for profit and show no regard for their safety.

“Our investigation into this group is ongoing, but we need anyone who was at the beach between 9am and 1pm on Tuesday to come forward. If you have photos, videos or any information, please get in touch.”
