Pub brawl killer’s jail term hiked after deadly punch
Michael Taiwo, 23, who fatally punched Glenn Davies, 25, in a Northampton pub, has had his sentence slashed no more. The Attorney General, Suella Braverman QC MP, stepped in to get justice served.
Birthday drinks turn deadly
On 24 August 2019, Taiwo and Mr Davies were enjoying a night out with colleagues at a Northampton pub. A row kicked off when Davies punched a fellow drinker. Taiwo jumped in, landing a heavy punch and kicking Davies in the face.
Deadly assault in the pub doorway
Door staff kicked Taiwo out, but he wasn’t done. He sneaked back in, then launched a brutal punch to the back of Davies’ head. Seconds later, Davies collapsed and never recovered.
Justice served after appeal
Taiwo was initially sentenced to 4 years and 10 months in March 2020. But after the Attorney General referred the case, the Court of Appeal deemed the sentence too lenient and bumped it up to 7 years and 2 months on 7 July.
“Taiwo’s dangerous and reckless actions cost the victim his life and caused significant grief for his family. I am pleased the Court of Appeal has increased the sentence today and I hope this gives some comfort to the victim’s family,” said Suella Braverman.
Taiwo tried to escape arrest but was caught on 28 August 2019 at a Northampton address.
