Nottingham Man Locked Up for Sexual Attacks on East Midlands Trains

A 64-year-old man from Nottingham has been slammed with a six-year jail sentence after sexually assaulting two women on East Midlands trains — all in one day.

Clifford Hayes, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court following a swift British Transport Police (BTP) probe into his vile crimes.

Two Attacks, One Terrifying Day

The court heard the sickening attacks happened on Monday, 7 October 2024. Hayes first targeted a 27-year-old woman on the 8:44am Nottingham to Liverpool train.

He sat next to her, covered his lap with a coat, began masturbating, then sexually assaulted her.

Later that afternoon, Hayes struck again on the 4:43pm Sheffield to Liverpool train, using the same sick method against another woman in her twenties.

Both victims bravely reported the attacks immediately. Police quickly used CCTV from the trains and Nottingham station to track down and arrest Hayes.

Flouting Court Order, Posing a Danger

At the time, Hayes was under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) designed to stop repeat offenders. His callous assaults were a clear breach of this order — showing he remained a major risk to public safety.

Police Praise Victims’ Courage

“Hayes’ sentence reflects the danger he poses to women and the seriousness of his actions,” said Detective Constable Lee Walker, who led the investigation. “Without the courage of the victims coming forward and supporting the investigation, this outcome would not have been possible.”

Keeping Passengers Safe

British Transport Police vow to keep the rail network safe for everyone.

“We take all reports of sexual offences seriously and will support victims throughout,” added DC Walker.

Passengers are urged to report any inappropriate behaviour by texting 61016 or calling 999 in an emergency.

Hayes’ jail term sends a strong message that sexual predators on public transport will be hunted down and brought to justice.
