Fuel Thieves Target Rural Bassetlaw: Police Sound Alarm
Fuel thefts have surged in Bassetlaw since October, with thieves using quad bikes and trailers to raid remote farms, lorries, and isolated spots. Police warn these crooks can syphon off litres of diesel or petrol in minutes – sometimes even threatening victims with violence.
Police Seize 50 Barrels of Stolen Diesel
On Thursday 2 February, officers swooped on a Harworth address on 1 Road, uncovering around 50 barrels piled high with suspected stolen diesel. This dramatic haul follows tips off the public and ongoing patrols in rural areas.
One Arrest in Growing Crackdown on Rural Crime
Thanks to sharp-eyed special constables on patrol, a 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with theft from a motor vehicle after being spotted with a quad bike and a trailer full of fuel barrels on the early morning of 25 January along the A614 Blyth Road.
Inspector Crawford Urges Public to Stay Alert
“We really need the public’s assistance to help us catch up with those who are bringing utter misery to our rural communities,” said Inspector Hayley Crawford, Bassetlaw’s District Commander.
“Thieves favour remote locations, which is why we’re ramping up patrols and operations to target hot spots and catch those syphoning fuel.”
“These criminals have no regard for the huge financial damage they cause to individuals and businesses. Some even resort to threats of violence if disturbed.”
“Please be vigilant, park in secure truck stops where possible, and report any suspicious activity. Together, we can stop these offenders from ruining our rural way of life.”
