Hero Cops Rescue Families from Burning Building During Recruitment Event

A team of Met Police officers were praised for their quick thinking after rescuing residents from a blazing building in Walthamstow — all while holding a recruitment drive.

From Recruitment to Rescue

Just after 1.20pm on Sunday, 5 June, officers from the Met’s Outreach Teams were on High Street, Walthamstow, signing up a new recruit when they heard urgent shouts about a fire on nearby Erskine Road.

The North East Command Unit officers, joined by the local Safer Neighbourhoods team, sprinted to the scene of the multi-occupancy building, where thick smoke poured from the first-floor windows.

Bravery Amidst the Flames

The building housed six separate rooms, each occupied by different families. Residents escaping were unsure if everyone was out.

Without hesitation, the officers charged into the burning property, methodically searching room by room. Only when certain all occupants had escaped did they retreat, pushed back by the fire.

The London Fire Brigade soon arrived and doused the flames, with an electrical appliance believed to be the cause.

Officers Provide Help After the Danger

After the fire, officers handed clothing to elderly residents and kept children amused with colouring books and pencils from their recruitment stand — showing a softer side to policing.

“The bravery and selflessness of all the officers involved in this incident highlights the qualities required to be a police officer,” said Inspector Amy Milton of the Central Outreach Team. “I am grateful that everyone inside the building was rescued safely; this would not have been possible without the quick thinking of those on the scene.”

Inspector Milton added, “It’s ironic that officers were in the area engaging with the public during a recruitment event when this occurred — there’s no better advert for the Met than seeing officers jump into action to keep people safe.”
