Repeat Offender Snaps Fast: Burglar Nabbed Just Hours After Prison Release
Colin Jones, 43, barely had time to enjoy his freedom before landing back behind bars. Less than 24 hours after being released from prison for a previous burglary, he cracked open a home in Ashington and stole a car in the early hours of December 15.
Burglary and Car Theft Within a Day
Jones marked his release by breaking into a house on Bothal Terrace. He ransacked the property, making off with a mobile phone, cash, and car keys. Hours later, the victim spotted their vehicle missing while about to start the school run.
Thanks to swift action from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols, the stolen car was found and returned undamaged to its owner before lunchtime. Jones was arrested and locked up in custody — all within 30 hours of walking free.
Quick Court Date and Heavy Sentence
Charged and remanded on the same day as his arrest, Jones pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court on January 18. Last week, on February 3, he was handed a hefty four-and-a-half-year jail term.
“The saying ‘old habits die hard’ is particularly true in the case of Colin Jones,” said Detective Constable Jon Mullen. “He celebrated his release with drinks before deciding to ‘gift’ himself a new car.”
“Sadly for Jones, he’s no mastermind at dodging the police. Officers caught him fast and charged him just as quickly.”
Police and Officials Praise Speedy Justice
DC Mullen added, “No one deserves to have their home broken into and their possessions stolen. I hope Jones uses his time inside to reflect and plan for a better future.”
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness condemned burglary as an “invasive and upsetting crime” and praised the force’s rapid response.
“Some people just can’t help but repeat their errors and refuse to change,” McGuinness said. “It’s right they’re caught to keep communities safe and stop innocent people being targeted again and again.”
“Great work to all involved.”
