Historic Church Ravaged by Arson but Saved by Firefighters
An arson attack tore through a Grade II-listed church built in 1861, destroying its roof and interior. Thankfully, the main structure and brickwork survived, thanks to heroic firefighter efforts. The culprit was sentenced just months after the blaze.
Firefighters Rush to Scene of Devastation
On the evening of Monday, 22nd June 2015, around 35 firefighters responded to the massive fire on Church Road, Fleet. The initial crew from Fleet Fire Station spotted flames bursting through the roof and immediately called for backup.
“When we first arrived, we could see that the whole roof was involved in flames, so immediately requested more crews to help us to bring it under control,” said Crew Manager Jack Jacobs. “It was awful to see such a historic building, which is at the heart of the town, involved in a huge fire.”
Community Spirit Sparks Rebuild
Firefighters from Rushmoor, Hartley Wintney, Portchester, and Royal Berkshire arrived swiftly, battling blazes into the night. Relief teams from Odiham, Bordon, Basingstoke, and Alton carried on the work, ensuring all hotspots were cooled. The fire was finally declared out the next day after thorough reinspections.
“It was wonderful to be invited back and see how the church has been rebuilt and transformed over the past eight years,” Jacobs added. “In response to the devastating incident, the congregation came together, restoring their beloved church, which continues to play a big role within the local community.”
