People smuggler slammed with £65K bill over Essex tragedy
Final defendant hit with hefty compensation order
A key people smuggler linked to the horrific deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants has been ordered to pay £65,157.65 in compensation to the victims’ families. Gheorghe Nica, 46, was already serving 27 years for manslaughter and human trafficking after instructing lorry driver Maurice Robinson in the fatal Essex case uncovered in Grays on October 23, 2019.
Crime proceeds crackdown piles up £283K in payments
Nica is the last defendant facing confiscation of criminal profits tied to the disaster. So far, convicted offenders connected to the smuggling racket have been forced to hand over a combined £283,802.58 to victims’ families – with some financial disputes still being hashed out in court.
Police vow justice and chasing dirty money
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe from Essex Police stressed the gravity of the tragedy and the push to make all involved pay for their crimes. She revealed the team’s relentless hunt for offenders’ assets to maximise compensation for bereaved families.
Prosecutor slams smuggler profiting from misery
Darren Fox, a CPS Proceeds of Crime specialist, tore into Nica for cashing in on the deadly smuggling. He highlighted close cooperation between prosecutors and police financial investigators to pinpoint Nica’s ille-gotten gains. The judge’s Confiscation and Compensation Orders match Nica’s available assets, ensuring families receive justice. “We’re determined to hold criminals to account and get compensation to those affected,” Fox said.
