21 Police Officers Injured in Violent Bristol Riot
A shocking attack outside Bridewell Police Station saw 21 officers hurt, two seriously, as a furious mob turned violent. Protesters threatened cops, torched police vehicles, including a community police station, and vandalised the station’s exterior.
Chaos Erupts After City Centre Protest
The mayhem followed a large city centre protest that drew around 3,000 people. What began as a demonstration quickly spiralled into violence, leaving Avon and Somerset Police facing one of their biggest investigations ever.
Major Crime Team Launches Massive Investigation
Detective Chief Superintendent Carolyn Belafonte vowed to crack down hard. “This will be one of the largest investigations in Avon and Somerset Police’s history,” she said. Over 100 officers and staff are combing through more than two terabytes of CCTV and bodycam footage, plus hundreds of videos from the public.
“The public response has been amazing. We really appreciate the support and kindness,” said Det Ch Supt Belafonte. “We’ve released images of ten suspects and expect to share more soon. If anyone recognises these people or themselves, please call 101 or visit your nearest police station.”
Eight Men Arrested—More Expected
So far, eight men aged 20 to 44 have been arrested for violent disorder. All have been released under investigation, except a 28-year-old from Bedminster Down who appeared in Bristol Magistrates’ Court charged with possessing an offensive weapon. His next hearing is on 10 June.
Detectives are also pursuing forensic leads and urge anyone with photos or footage of the disturbances to submit them via a dedicated police portal. More arrests are expected as the probe continues.
