Cop Slaps Handcuff Key in Detainee’s Neck – Gets Final Warning!
PC Niven Poliah Found Guilty of Misconduct
A serving police constable has narrowly escaped the sack after a shocking misconduct hearing. PC Niven Poliah, attached to the North Area Basic Command Unit, was handed a final written warning. The panel found him guilty of using excessive force and engaging in discreditable conduct.
Incident at Barnet Hospital Turns Ugly
The drama unfolded on 30 January 2019, when PC Poliah was assigned to guard an aggressive arrested man at Barnet Hospital. The suspect had lashed out earlier, attempting to head-butt one officer, kicking two others, and even spitting blood.
While handcuffed to a wheelchair, the man spat directly into PC Poliah’s face as the officer tried to remove the handcuffs. In response, Poliah allegedly shoved his handcuff key into the man’s neck, pressing hard enough to cause a visible wound.
Panel Condemns Force as Gross Misconduct
The man reportedly pleaded, “You’re stabbing me in the neck,” but Poliah did not immediately stop, the hearing found.
The misconduct hearing took place over three days in November, chaired by Judith Gribble. Both charges stood: use of excessive force and discreditable conduct. The panel deemed Poliah’s actions gross misconduct but opted for a final written warning instead of dismissal.
