Student-loan jet-setter to ISIS charged by Met Police

Yayha Rashid Charged Over Terrorism Offences

Yayha Rashid, 23, who blew his student loan and grants on travelling as a teenager to join Islamic State, has been charged by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command (CTC). The north London man faces two counts under the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today, Monday 2 December.

Arrest Over Failure to Notify Police

On Sunday 1 December, CTC officers arrested Rashid for failing to keep the police informed of his phone number and email address, as required under sections 48 and 54 of the Counter Terrorism Act. He was detained under PACE and charged with two offences for not notifying authorities without reasonable excuse.

No Link to London Bridge Attack

Authorities confirmed this latest arrest is unrelated to the London Bridge terror attack on 29 November. Investigations into Rashid’s case were already underway before the incident took place.
