IOPC launches probe after man dies in Met Police custody in West London
Man dies days after arrest in Shepherd’s Bush
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation into the Metropolitan Police Service after the tragic death of 40-year-old Daniel Cooper in custody.
Cooper was arrested by Met officers on July 12 in Shepherd’s Bush. He was taken to the custody suite at Hammersmith and Fulham police station, charged, and denied bail.
Found unresponsive in cell, dies in hospital
Just two days later on July 14, Cooper was found unresponsive in his cell. He was rushed to hospital but sadly died shortly after arrival.
IOPC probes police conduct and gathers evidence
The IOPC quickly launched a full probe after being notified by the Met Police. Their investigation includes reviewing CCTV from the custody centre and arrest scene, officer bodycam footage, and collecting statements from all staff involved.
A post-mortem was conducted three weeks ago, with further results awaited to clarify what happened.
Family comforted as inquest set to open
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe offered her condolences to Daniel Cooper’s family and friends. She stressed the need for an independent, thorough inquiry to get to the bottom of the police’s actions during Cooper’s detention.
An inquest is due to begin on Wednesday at West London Coroner’s Court.
