Rapist Who Targeted Two Lone Women Faces Long Jail Term

Serial Attacker Strikes Twice in Greenwich

A vile predator who attacked two lone women in separate incidents across Greenwich has been found guilty of multiple rape offences. Alan Green, 39, from SE9, was convicted at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, 25 November. Green was found guilty of one count of digital penetration and attempted rape for an attack in Blackheath this March. He was also convicted of three counts of rape and two counts of digital penetration for a terrifying assault in Tunnel Avenue in June. He faces sentencing on 13 January 2020 and police say he should expect a hefty prison term.

Horrific Attacks Shake Local Community

The first victim, a woman in her 50s, was crossing Blackheath Common at 4.30am on Saturday, 9 March. She noticed a man sitting on a bench near a bike. Thinking nothing of it, she approached – only for the man to suddenly grab her, push her to the ground, and attempt to rape her before speeding off on his bike. “Terrified and traumatised,” she alerted colleagues and the police immediately. Three months later, at 2am on Saturday, 2 June, a woman in her 20s was on the phone while approaching a footbridge near Tunnel Avenue, SE10. She noticed a man follow her suspiciously, then grab her. Despite her desperate struggle, he dragged her into bushes and raped her three times before fleeing on a bike. She managed to get home and call police.

Police Praise Victims’ Bravery in Closing Case

Officers used forensic evidence to link Green to the attacks and arrested him at home on 19 June. He refused to answer questions in custody. Detective Constable Andrew Sumpter said:

“Green is an opportunistic monster and a total coward who denied his actions, forcing the victims to relive their trauma through the court process. Their bravery has been astonishing and I am grateful for their support which led to this conviction. I hope this helps bring some closure. I also commend the whole investigative team and forensic unit for their invaluable work. I hope Green spends a very long time in prison.”

Justice is waiting, but one thing is clear — this predator is finally off the streets.
