Residents Return to Regent’s Park Flats After Structural Scare

Most evacuees from The Combe in Munster Square, Regent’s Park NW1, are set to go back home tonight, Camden Council has confirmed. The all-clear follows a detailed inspection after fears of a serious crack in a ninth-floor flat.

Experts Declare Building Safe

Structural surveyors and the Wates Dangerous Structures team carried out an urgent assessment. They found the crack was on a non-load-bearing wall, so the building’s overall structure remains intact. The London Fire Brigade inspected the site and agreed the block is safe for most residents.

However, three households—the affected flat plus those directly above and below—won’t be returning just yet. They’ll stay out for extra monitoring early next week. Camden Council is providing these families with temporary housing and full support.

Camden Council Leader Speaks Out

Council Leader Richard Olszewski said: “The Wates report shows the building is safe, and the London Fire Brigade agrees with our assessment. We took swift action to protect residents and are thankful for their patience over the last 24 hours. Our priority is urgent repairs so the remaining households can return soon. They have our full support tonight.”

Rapid Unfolding of Events

  • Thursday evening: A loud noise alerted a resident. Fire services found the crack and evacuated 18 flats after structural engineers were called.
  • Later that night: Camden Council and Fire Brigade expanded evacuation to all 70 flats. About 150 people relocated for safety.
  • Friday morning: Specialists confirmed the damage was isolated. Repairs begin immediately.

Support and Next Steps

Fifty residents stayed overnight at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, helped by the British Red Cross. Many others stayed with family or friends. Camden Council urges anyone needing help to call 020 7974 8865.

Repair work on the affected flats starts now. Safety fencing remains in place. The council pledges ongoing monitoring and regular updates for residents.

This tense 24 hours tested the community but emergency services’ fast response kept everyone safe and supported.
