Rogue Trader Jailed for Ripping Off Vulnerable Homeowners
A sneaky ‘rogue trader’ who conned vulnerable homeowners out of hundreds of thousands has finally been locked up. Hughie Smith, 49, from Fernlands Close, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Friday, 3 March, after pleading guilty to multiple fraud offences. The crackdown was a joint effort by Surrey and Sussex police, alongside Trading Standards.
Targeted Elderly Couple Bleed Dry for £180,000
Smith’s dirty scheme began in 2015 when he lured an elderly couple in Knaphill with an offer to fix their garden’s brick wall. But the work soon spiralled out of control. Smith bullied them into unnecessary repairs, charging sky-high fees for shoddy work. The couple lost a staggering £180,000. Smith kept hassling them with follow-up calls until their son’s suspicions triggered a police probe.
Investigations uncovered Smith as the mastermind of a wide-ranging rogue trader fraud across Surrey and Sussex.
Traders’ Shoddy Work and Massive Overcharging Exposed
Trading Standards inspected the couple’s home and found they were overcharged by more than £100,000 for substandard jobs. But Smith’s scams didn’t stop there. In Sussex, he ripped off another victim for nearly £200,000 over nine months. His sons, Michael and John, were also caught helping launder the dirty money. They were convicted at Hove Crown Court on the same day.
Police Warn: Watch Out for Door-to-Door Scams
Detective Constable Barnard said: “This lengthy prison sentence shows we won’t tolerate criminals exploiting vulnerable people. It should act as a warning to anyone thinking they can pull off similar scams.”
This case highlights the risks of door-to-door fraud. Not all knocking is legit—fraudsters often target homes with bogus offers or poor-quality services. Always verify anyone calling at your door by checking company details online. Never ring the number they give; find the official one yourself. Protect yourself from becoming the next victim of costly scams.
