£12,500 Fine and More for Dodgy Waste Storage

Ryde Demolition Company Ltd was hit with a £12,500 fine, plus a £170 victim surcharge and £4,000 costs, after illegally storing asbestos waste. The company’s director, Neil Harrison of St John’s Hill, Ryde, also received a £1,108 fine plus a victim surcharge.

Environment Agency Cracks Down on Unsafe Asbestos Handling

Back in April 2017, the Environment Agency got wind of asbestos being dumped in a large skip at Rosemary Copse Farm off Smallbrook Lane. Agency officers swooped on the site where Harrison confessed to transporting and storing asbestos waste without an environmental permit.

Harrison admitted dumping the waste at the farm until the container was full, then moving it to the mainland. He also failed to correctly use consignment notes and neglected to submit the necessary records for hazardous waste movement.

Warning Over Hazardous Waste Carriers

“Mr Harrison’s actions showed a blatant disregard for the environment,” said Richard O’Callaghan, Environment Manager at the Environment Agency. “He was prosecuted before in 2013 for similar offences. Asbestos is hazardous waste and must be handled correctly. We won’t hesitate to prosecute offenders.”

“We urge businesses and the public to check waste carriers are registered on Gov.UK and always get a consignment note when disposing of hazardous waste like asbestos.”

Don’t risk your wallet or the environment—use only properly licensed waste carriers when getting rid of dangerous materials.
