Woman Hit with Fine for Suicide Attempt After Mental Health Crisis Ignored
A grieving woman says she was slapped with a fine after trying to take her own life – all because she was refused mental health help.
Denied Beds, Arrested Instead of Help
In her own words, she reveals the shocking ordeal: “I should’ve got help from a mental health professional but was told, ‘No, sorry, there are no beds. You’ll just have to manage on your own.’ Police were called, but instead of support, they arrested me. They promised a mental health assessment in custody – but I was handed a fine with no support in place.”
Left to Suffer Alone
She explains how her father had to come and pick her up, with her sedated just to get through the night. Despite having multiple diagnosed mental illnesses, she was repeatedly turned away every time she reached out for help.
“You have a person willing to recover with support, yet every time I ask for help, I’m told I’m ‘not ill enough.’ It makes no sense. The fine was originally £60 but was reduced to £30. I paid it just to avoid the agony of court. This system is failing so many – it’s not right. People are dying. Bunch of assholes!”
‘No Willful Obstruction’ – Just Desperation
She was fined for “willful obstruction of a highway” after walking into the road during her mental health crisis. “There was nothing willful about it. I was at breaking point, turned away by those who should have helped. I thought, I’m done. Today I’m doing better – I’m not walking in front of cars because I’m no longer suicidal.”
