Top UK Cop Slams Shop Security for Aiding Gangs as Shoplifting Spirals Out of Control
Sir Mark Rowley Blasts Retailers Over Shoplifting Crisis
Britain’s top cop has launched a fierce attack on some shop security staff for allegedly tipping off organised shoplifting gangs. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley warns retailers must stop dragging their feet as thefts rocket across UK high streets.
Sir Mark accused certain stores of refusing to share CCTV footage and photos with police. Worse, some prevent their own staff from giving witness statements or taking time off to testify in court.
Shoplifting Explodes: Nearly Three Thefts Every Minute
New government stats lay bare the scale of the crisis. Almost three shoplifting incidents hit UK shops every single minute. The British Retail Consortium reveals over 20 million thefts in 2024 – costing retailers a jaw-dropping £2.2 billion.
- A staggering 97% of shoplifting crimes never reach the police.
- England and Wales alone saw 529,994 offences recorded by June 2025.
- The sharp rise since the pandemic shows law enforcement is still playing catch-up.
“Retailers Must Step Up” – Sir Mark’s No-Nonsense Warning
Speaking to The Telegraph, Sir Mark admitted retailers were once justified in criticising police inaction. But now, the Metropolitan Police has doubled down and is clawing back ground.
“They were right to say to us, ‘please step up more’. And we have done. They need to step up more.” “There are some who are fantastic, but I’m putting a marker down for those who aren’t playing their part.”
Facial Recognition a Gamechanger – But Retailers Holding Police Back
Sir Mark revealed facial recognition technology is cracking 40% of cases when combined with CCTV and offender databases. Yet, Police investigations are still hampered by retailers’ reluctance to cooperate.
- Shoplifting offences in London dropped 4.4% from April to December 2024.
- Charges and penalties surged 82%, showing police are getting tougher.
- But detection rates in England and Wales remain dismally low at 9% – the UK’s worst.
On Friday, Sir Mark met with West End retailers, driving home the message: without their help, shoplifters will keep running rings around police.
