Lambeth Council Chief Bayo Dosunmu Quits After Drug and Drink Driving Charges
Lambeth Council’s top boss, Bayo Dosunmu, has handed in his resignation following a string of serious charges. The council chief faces allegations of drunk driving, possession of a class A drug, and fleeing the scene of a crash.
Serious Charges Spark Sudden Exit
The 46-year-old, who lives in Hammersmith, has been on leave since his arrest in Westminster last month. Police charged him on June 24 with:
- Possession of a class A controlled drug
- Failing to stop after an accident
- Driving above the alcohol limit
- Driving without third-party insurance
Dosunmu is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 1. His official resignation takes effect on July 15.
From Rising Star to Resignation
Dosunmu was appointed Lambeth Council chief executive in April 2022, succeeding Andrew Travers. Before this, he was deputy chief executive and strategic director at Lambeth since 2019, after a stint at Homes England. His swift fall from grace is a shock for the local government.
Fiona Connolly, the council’s corporate director for housing and adult social care, has stepped up as acting chief executive. The council confirmed it will soon launch a search for a new permanent leader.
Council Vows Smooth Transition Amid Turmoil
In a statement, Lambeth Council voiced disappointment over the situation but reassured residents that services would continue uninterrupted during the leadership change. A spokesperson said, “We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of service and governance for our community.”
Dosunmu’s resignation marks a major shake-up at Lambeth Council as it braces for future challenges.
