Brighton University Staff Down Tools Over Pay Fury

Brighton University workers have launched fresh strikes over wages, UNISON reveals. The walkouts hit Thursday 24th, Friday 25th, and Wednesday 30th November.

Cleaners, Admin, Security Join The Revolt

It’s not just lecturers. Admin, cleaners, library staff, security, and catering teams — many of the lowest earners in the university sector — are all stamping their feet. They demand a fair pay rise to battle soaring living costs.

Wages haven’t kept up with inflation for years, says the union, pushing staff to breaking point.

Strike Storm Hits Universities Across UK

This is the second wave of action this term for most of the 19 universities affected. Staff walked out earlier in September and October, sparking chaos from England to Scotland.

  • Universities in Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, and Brighton are all in the mix.
  • The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester has also announced strike dates.

The University Employers Association’s 3% pay offer from May was slammed by staff as a “pay cut in disguise.” Inflation runs at a minimum 11.1%, making their wages worth far less.

UNISON Slams “Low Pay Crisis” in Universities

Mike Short, UNISON head of education, said: “Low pay has been a massive, and growing, problem in the university sector for more than a decade.

“The cost of living crisis is pushing people to the brink. University support staff can’t even cover the basics. They’ve had enough and are quitting the sector for jobs on better pay.

“Going on strike is always a last resort, but the inadequate pay workers have been given this year is the final straw.

“Universities should do the right thing and come back with more money to show they care about their employees. This would help keep them in their posts so students can receive the support they need and have the best possible experience of university.”
