Tragic TV Lie Detector Shock: Steve Dymond’s Final Days Revealed
Steve Dymond, a guest on ITV’s Jeremy Kyle Show, was left “distraught” after flunking a lie detector test on the programme. The 63-year-old from Portsmouth, Hampshire, took his own life just seven days after filming the May 2019 episode — which never aired.
Lie Detector Drama Sparks Devastation
Dymond appeared on the show to prove he hadn’t cheated on ex-fiancée Jane Callaghan from Gosport. Instead, the test branded him a liar. His son, Carl Woolley, told Winchester Coroner’s Court that Steve was deeply upset by the verdict.
“He said to me he wasn’t lying. He was telling the truth, he was not lying… and asking why it said he had lied,” Carl testified.
Adding to the humiliation, Carl said Jeremy Kyle encouraged the studio audience to boo Steve during the taping. “He was very upset, saying he was being called a liar, everyone had jumped on him,” Carl said.
Family Describe ‘Broken’ Steve After Show
Steve’s brother, Leslie Dymond, described his sibling as “completely broken and frightened” after the recording. He recalled Jeremy Kyle jeering at Steve and calling him a “failure.”
“Steve was consumed by it. He kept mentioning the lie detector result being pushed in his face and the heckling from the presenter and audience,” Leslie said.
Coroner Highlights Cruelty, Inquest to Uncover Full Story
The court heard Steve was “incredibly stressed,” in tears, and near collapse after the episode. Previous evidence revealed he felt “life was not worth living” following the show’s ordeal.
Hampshire Coroner Jason Pegg stated Jeremy Kyle called Steve a “serial liar” and claimed he “would not trust him with a chocolate button.”
The ongoing inquest will probe Steve’s involvement with the ITV show, his personal relationships, and the care he was given by producers and ITV. Counsel Rachel Spearing stressed the inquiry is limited to Steve’s life between March 14 and May 9, 2019 — steering clear of a wider reality TV investigation.
The inquest will run until September 10, with Jeremy Kyle, ITV, Steve’s family, and his GP all taking part as interested parties.
