Nearly 200 Drivers Nabbed Using Phones Behind the Wheel in Hampshire Blitz

Almost 200 motorists were caught using their mobile phones while driving during a tough week-long crackdown across Hampshire. Roads Policing Officers from the Joint Operations Unit stopped 190 drivers last month as part of a nationwide road safety campaign.

Shocking Rise in Phone-Using Drivers

This figure marks a worrying 36% increase compared to last year, when 141 offenders were caught. One driver was even pulled over twice — once en route to a mobile phone referral course after a previous stop!

Cop’s Warning: “Phones Behind the Wheel Spell Disaster”

Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard slammed the “disappointing” figures. He said: “Too many people still don’t grasp the dangers of using a phone while driving. Most know they shouldn’t, but don’t understand how huge a distraction it is.”

He added: “This just shows why we need to run these campaigns — to remind people and prosecute those foolish enough to take the risk. My advice? Turn off your phone, put it out of reach and out of sight. It’s not worth the risk.”

Stats Reveal Who’s Guilty

  • 83% of offenders were male
  • 81% were over 25 years old
  • 70% drove cars
  • 25% drove vans

Most — a hefty 84% — were offered a referral course to kick the habit and drive safer.
