Strabane Man Jailed for Shocking 152 Child Abuse Offences

A 35-year-old man from Strabane has been slammed with a 10-year sentence for a horrific spree of 152 child sexual abuse offences. Gerard Murray was handed the jail term today at Dungannon Crown Court after preying on 40 boys aged 10 to 17 over five years.

Online Predator Masqueraded as Teen Girl on Snapchat

Murray’s twisted crimes took place between 2016 and 2021. He tricked his victims by posing as a teenage girl on Snapchat. This deception lured boys into sending explicit images and videos, which he used to satisfy his sick urges.

  • Offences included sexual communication with a child
  • Causing or inciting children to engage in sexual activity
  • Forcing children to watch sexual acts
  • Producing indecent photos and pseudo images of minors

Jail and Lifetime Restrictions

The judge gave Murray a 10-year sentence: five years in prison, followed by five years on licence. He’s also been slapped with an indefinite spot on the Sex Offenders Register and hit with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).

On top of this, Murray is barred from working with children and vulnerable adults indefinitely.

Police Praise Victims, Warn Communities

“The bravery of the victims and their families has been vital,” said Detective Chief Inspector Lorraine McCutcheon, who led the investigation. “We remain committed to tackling these vile crimes.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland urged anyone suspecting abuse to speak up immediately. They stressed that specially trained officers are on hand to support victims and handle cases with compassion.

DCI McCutcheon called on parents and guardians to stay alert. She advised families to discuss internet safety openly, use parental controls, and carefully monitor children’s online interactions to spot predators early.
