Driver Charged After Horror Crash on A2 Near Dartford

Police have charged a man following a serious smash on the A2 near Dartford late on Friday, February 16, 2024. The fiery collision took place around 10:40 pm on the Watling Street coastbound carriageway, between the A296 and Ebbsfleet junctions.

Three Cars, One Passenger Seriously Hurt

The crash involved a black Ford Fiesta, a blue Audi S3, and a blue MG HS. A passenger in the Ford Fiesta was critically injured and airlifted to a London hospital, where she remains in a serious condition. The Fiesta’s driver and another passenger suffered minor injuries and were discharged after treatment.

Audi Driver Fled Scene, Police Launch Probe

Shockingly, the driver of the blue Audi S3 and his passenger made off before police arrived. Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) quickly launched a full probe into the incident.

Suspect Held and Charged

On Tuesday, February 20, 35-year-old Matthew Sparkes, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged the following day with:

  • Causing serious injury by dangerous driving
  • Failing to stop after a collision
  • Failing to provide details or report at police station
  • Driving without insurance

Sparkes was remanded in custody and appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court. A 25-year-old woman from Walworth, Greater London, was also arrested in connection and released on bail pending further inquiries.
