New Year’s Eve Blaze at Brighton Flat: Man Arrested for Arson
On New Year’s Eve, just after 9pm, emergency teams rushed to a fire at Bedford Towers, Kings Road, Brighton. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) and Sussex Police launched a rapid response to the blaze that shook the residential block.
Firefighters Battle Blaze, Holiday Inn Evacuated
ESFRS deployed nine fire engines, including an aerial ladder and command unit, alongside two senior fire officers to tackle the flames. As a precaution, guests at the nearby Holiday Inn were temporarily evacuated to keep them safe.
One Rescued and Arson Suspect Held
Fire crews successfully rescued one individual from the burning flat. That person was promptly taken into custody by Sussex Police. The arrested man was later named as 43-year-old Liam Mitchell, a Kings Road resident.
Serious Charges and Court Appearance Set
Mitchell faces grave allegations, including arson with intent to endanger life and reckless arson. He remains in custody and is due at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on January 2.
Investigation Ongoing as Community Breathes Easy
Despite minor damage, the fire was quickly extinguished thanks to the swift emergency response. Holiday Inn guests returned once the area was declared safe. Authorities continue probing the motive behind the fire as updates are awaited.
