Teen Sentenced to Life for Fatal Knife Attack on 79-Year-Old
Daniel Rounce, only 18, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years for the fatal stabbing of 79-year-old Gerald Wickes in Leicester. The shocking attack took place on February 22, 2023, at a house in Queens Park Way.
Fleeing Scene, Caught in Aylestone
After stabbing Mr. Wickes in the chest, Rounce fled the scene. But police tracked him down later that same evening in the Aylestone Road area, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder. CCTV footage showed him running from the property following the brutal assault.
Guilty Verdict at Leicester Crown Court
At Leicester Crown Court, Rounce was found guilty not only of murder but also of illegal knife possession. The court heard how Rounce, a complete stranger, entered Mr. Wickes’ former partner’s home before the deadly attack.
Following questions from Mr. Wickes and his former partner, Rounce suddenly pulled a knife from his jacket and stabbed the elderly man.
Police Praise Investigation, Offer Condolences
Detective Inspector David Greenhalgh, leading the East Midlands Special Operations Unit investigation, expressed sympathy for the victim’s family. “This was a devastating incident which resulted in a 79-year-old man losing his life in a horrendous way because of the actions of a teenager who was unknown to him,” he said.
“We will never fully know why this happened, and my thoughts very much remain with Mr. Wickes’ family.”
Police searches of nearby woodland recovered the murder weapon and Rounce’s belongings. The case highlights the tragic consequences of knife crime in the UK.
