Teen Stabbed Best Mate to Death in Newhaven After Row
A 17-year-old has been jailed for life after stabbing his friend to death following a heated argument in Newhaven.
Ollie Wells, 18, Dies After Being Stabbed Twice
Colin “Ollie” Wells, 18, was fatally stabbed twice outside a home in Elphick Road at 11:30pm on January 6. Ollie had been staying temporarily at the address, sleeping on a mattress in the bedroom of Trent Hutchinson, who was 16 at the time.
Trent Hutchinson denied murder but was found guilty on Thursday, September 17, after a week-long trial at Hove Crown Court. Sentencing followed on Friday, with Hutchinson handed a life sentence and a minimum of 14 years behind bars. Judge Jeremy Gold QC also lifted the legal ban on publishing Hutchinson’s name.
Deadly Fight Erupts Over ‘Bringing Trouble’
The court heard how Hutchinson’s mother had allowed Ollie to stay with them. Trouble started when Ollie answered the door to some men arriving in a car. Hutchinson accused him of “bringing trouble to the house,” sparking a physical fight inside.
During the scuffle, Hutchinson punched Ollie, who ran outside. Hutchinson followed and soon returned, telling his mum he had stabbed Ollie. The fatal knife was taken from the house.
Ollie collapsed in the street and despite paramedics’ desperate efforts, died at the scene.
Police and Family Speak Out on Tragic Killing
“This tragic moment has had a terrible impact on two families,” said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme. “One young man lost his life, cruelly and savagely murdered by someone he believed to be his best friend. The families will carry the loss forever.”
“Hutchinson claimed self-defence and said he didn’t intend serious harm, but the injuries showed a sustained and deliberate attack.”
“Knife crime has a huge impact. If you know anyone carrying knives or involved in knife violence, please come forward and help us stop more young lives being lost.”
Ollie’s family said: “Ollie’s death has devastated us all. He was our youngest, full of life and potential despite challenges from his autism. He loved horse-riding, sports, music and was a passionate Chelsea fan.”
“Though this tragic crime has affected another family too, we feel justice has been done. We will never forget Ollie and mourn his loss every day.”
