A devastating explosion ripped through a house on Dulwich Road, Kingstanding, on Sunday evening, claiming the life of 79-year-old Doreen Rees-Bibb.

Man Rescued, Now in Critical but Stable Condition

Emergency crews also pulled a man from the burning property. He remains in hospital in a critical yet stable condition.

Investigation Points to Accidental Gas Leak

West Midlands Fire Service, West Midlands Police, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have joined forces in an investigation. Their early findings suggest the blast was caused by the accidental ignition of a significant gas leak from a pipe joint inside the house.

The Fire Service confirmed demolition work on 29 June allowed safer access to test the internal gas pipes, leading to this conclusion.

Police Continue Investigation and Support for Victims

West Midlands Police are working to officially identify the victim and gather evidence for the Coroner. Family liaison officers are also providing support to those affected by the tragedy.

The HSE is probing if any work-related activities played a role in the explosion.

Heroic Neighbour Speaks Out

Just days ago, a neighbour told ITV Central how he rushed to rescue a man from the burning property. Harley Seccombe said he “acted on instinct” after hearing the explosion on Dulwich Road.
