Covid’s Here to Stay – Sussex Police Step Up Enforcement
Covid-19 isn’t going anywhere, and Sussex Police are on high alert to stop it spreading. The force is teaming up with local communities to keep Sussex safe and crack down on rule-breakers.
New Rules Hit Pubs and Restaurants
This week, the government slapped in new laws: face masks must be worn in more places, pubs and bars face a strict 10pm curfew, and the ‘rule of six’ remains in force. You can check the full regulations here.
Police Patrols to Enforce Covid Laws
Officers and PCSOs are out in force, educating the public on the latest Covid rules and urging compliance. Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Jayne Dando says most people are playing ball.
“The vast majority stick to the law and follow guidance. It’s a national health crisis, and we all have a part to play,” she said.
She added fight against Covid is a team effort:
“Where needed, officers explain the rules and people respond positively by changing behaviour.”
Crackdown on Rule-Breakers
However, those flouting the rules risk fines. In the past month, Sussex Police handed out three fines for no face masks on public transport and slapped fines on two people breaching self-isolation laws.
Dando warned:
“People who continue to put others at risk will face enforcement. We need everyone to work together to stop the virus spreading.”
The police service is back to pre-Covid demand levels. Officers must prioritise public safety, so everyone must take personal responsibility to keep the virus in check. Serious breaches of the rules should be reported online, with 999 reserved for emergencies only.
