Young thug jailed for brutal robbery of vulnerable 77-year-old in Sutton-in-Ashfield
Home invasion horror in The Oval
Dawid Stanek, 21, smashed into a 77-year-old man’s home in The Oval, Sutton-in-Ashfield on the afternoon of 21 September. The victim, suffering from dementia and serious ill-health, was attacked before Stanek fled with cash and jewellery.
Swift police action leads to arrest
Stanek was tracked down and arrested at a Kirkby-in-Ashfield address thanks to Mansfield’s new Operation Reacher team. He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court and immediately pleaded guilty to robbery.
Sentenced to seven years for callous attack
The court sentenced Stanek to seven years behind bars for the vicious robbery. The elderly victim was hospitalised with head and arm injuries after being struck during the break-in.
Family devastated by the nightmare
“This was an absolutely horrific experience for dad and the whole family to go through,” said his daughter Michelle.
“He is one of the kindest people you could ever wish to meet and for this to happen in his own home was absolutely disgusting. It really was the lowest of the low.”
“Dad can no longer live independently and has been cared for in a home since the attack. We can’t even visit him because of Covid restrictions. This young thug didn’t just steal his money and jewellery – he took away his freedom and independence.”
“He lived in that house for 48 years and to think that was his last experience there is so upsetting.”
Detective praises victim’s bravery and promises justice
Detective Constable Adam Penn said: “This was a shocking and cowardly attack on a vulnerable man who had no chance against someone more than 50 years his junior.”
“Stanek used inexcusable violence, leaving an elderly man in hospital. This crime deeply affected the victim, family, and community. I’m pleased he has been punished and hope this sentence brings some closure.”
“I also hope Stanek uses his time in custody to rethink his life.”
