Life Support to Be Switched Off for Brain-Damaged Boy Despite Family Pleas

The heartbreaking case of 12-year-old Archie, left brain-damaged and unconscious since April, is reaching a tragic milestone. The European Court of Human Rights has refused to delay the termination of his life support, backing earlier decisions made by UK courts.

Archie’s life support machine is set to be switched off at 11 a.m. this Thursday at the Royal London Hospital, where he has been treated since being found unconscious at his Southend-on-Sea home. His mother, Hollie Dance, believes he was taking part in an online challenge when he suffered his injury.

Doctors Declare Recovery ‘Futile’ as Family Fights On

The Barts NHS Health Trust said no changes to Archie’s care would be made until all legal matters were settled. Medics have told the family Archie is “highly likely” brain-stem dead with no chance of recovery. A High Court judge described continuing treatment as “futile.”

But Ms Dance is fighting back, pleading for alternatives abroad. “There are other countries that want to take Archie and treat him,” she told reporters outside the hospital. “Other countries are very supportive and want him to be treated. They have a high success rate, and I don’t see the harm. If they can offer even a glimmer of hope…”

Family Demands Chance to Transfer Archie Overseas

She questioned why Archie has to die in the UK when treatment options abroad exist. “Why is it so black and white? He has to die in this country because this country will no longer treat him? Other countries want to treat him, and I believe he should be allowed to go.”

Ms Dance mentioned potential options including Tokyo and Italy. The family also called for Archie to be moved to a hospice if life support ends, hoping he could rest in a peaceful setting surrounded by “squirrels and wildlife.” However, doctors say his complex condition makes moving him impossible.

Breakdown Between Family and Hospital Amidst Emotional Struggle

Ms Dance admitted relations with the hospital have “completely broken down,” though she praised the nurses caring for her son. The tragic saga continues with the family desperate for a lifeline in the final hours.
