Brutal Killer Jordan McSweeney Jailed for Murder of Zara in Ilford
Jordan McSweeney, 29, with no fixed address, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 14 December. He had pleaded guilty to the murder and sexual assault of Zara back on 18 November.
Terrifying Night in Ilford
On the early hours of Sunday, 26 June, Zara was walking home along Cranbrook Road, Ilford, when McSweeney struck. He snuck up behind her, dragging her into a driveway where he launched a savage attack. McSweeney returned multiple times to brutally beat her, inflicting serious injuries.
Passers-by and neighbours desperately tried to save Zara, with one performing CPR. She was rushed to hospital but tragically died that same morning. Zara was just 35 years old.
Family Speaks Out: ‘No Peace, Only Horror’
“Today’s sentencing protects the public from a man who cannot and must not live freely in the world,” said Zara’s aunt, Farah Naz. “His extreme indifference to Zara’s life and the law makes him very dangerous. We have some retribution, but no peace. There are questions to be answered, lessons to be learnt, and changes to be made. Zara’s life was senselessly and brutally crushed, and every day we live with the horror she was forced to face. She was the light, the warmth, the laughter in our family. We live with a profound loss each day and are destroyed a little more. We’re deeply touched by the kindness from so many—testament to Zara’s powerful spirit.”
