Met Police Launches Crackdown on Corrupt Officers

The Met isn’t just policing London — it’s cleaning house. While most of the tens of thousands of officers serve with honour, new Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has revealed that hundreds are dragging the force’s reputation through the mud. They must be rooted out, and fast.

Operation Assure: Keeping Police Honest

In a bold move to rebuild trust with Londoners, the Met has kicked off Operation Assure. This new scheme re-checks the vetting of officers and staff whenever their behaviour raises red flags. It’s all part of heeding the calls from HMICFRS and the College of Policing to clean up policing across the UK.

The operation targets anyone whose conduct breaks public trust — from those involved in criminal probes to officers disciplined with warnings or demotions. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) will step in whenever “adverse information” surfaces about an individual.

Public Trust at Stake, Says DPS Commander

Commander James Harman, DPS, said: “The Commissioner has been clear: many officers shouldn’t wear the badge. The public deserves confidence that every Met officer is vetted properly — and that vetting is regularly reviewed. It’s not just paperwork; it’s about trust.”

“We’re serious about rooting out corruption and abuse. When fresh evidence shows an officer no longer meets our standards, we’ll act swiftly. We’re proud to lead the way nationally in these vital reforms.”

Vetting Reviews Could End Careers

Once Operation Assure kicks in, a senior vetting officer will review the individual’s status. The vetting could be confirmed, or stripped away — meaning no access to police systems or premises. That often triggers disciplinary procedures that can end with dismissal.

Appeals won’t be easy. A commander and the Met’s force vetting manager will oversee any challenges.

National Clean-Up Underway

The initiative was crafted by the DPS with input from legal teams, HR, unions, and staff associations to ensure fairness and thoroughness. Other police forces across the UK are set to follow the Met’s lead with similar vetting crackdowns.

London’s Met has sent a clear message: no more cover-ups. If you’re a crooked cop, you’re on notice.
