Fly-tipping shocker as tonnes of asbestos dumped in Chandlers Ford
Residents and business owners in Chandlers Ford are fuming after a lorry dumped a huge haul of asbestos outside the Dasic Marine Limited unit on Eagle Close industrial estate.
Lorry blamed, but company denies responsibility
A witness spotted the truck emblazoned with “Windsor Waste Management.” However, the firm has said they sold that very lorry back in August. Meanwhile, local owners are stuck with cleaning up the hazardous mess – and footing the costly bill.
Police wash their hands – it’s private land
Shockingly, police refuse to investigate as the dumping happened on private property. Fly-tipping, the illegal dumping of waste on non-licensed land, is a serious crime punishable by stiff fines and imprisonment. But the law looks the other way when it’s on private ground.
Deadly danger: asbestos still kills thousands
Asbestos is no joke – it kills around 5,000 workers every year, more than road accidents. Around 20 tradespeople die weekly from past exposure. And it’s not just history; asbestos lingers in any building built or refurbished before 2000.
When disturbed, fibres become airborne and, if inhaled, cause deadly diseases that only show up years later. Once diagnosed, it’s often too late for treatment.
Environment Agency steps in on serious cases
The 1 Agency has been notified due to the health risks. If more than 5 cubic metres of fibrous asbestos or 75 litres of dangerous waste is dumped, the Environment Agency must be told. They handle large-scale or hazardous dumping threatening health or the environment.
Offenders face unlimited fines and up to 5 years in prison. But for now, locals face the fallout of this toxic fly-tip.
