Brighton and Hove Police Honoured for Daring Crime-Busting and Community Care

Brighton’s crime fighters and unsung heroes were celebrated at Hove’s 1st Central Cricket Ground on Monday, June 6. The event drew the town’s top brass, including Brighton and Hove Mayor Councillor Lizzie Deane and East Sussex High Sheriff Jane King, who applauded officers and staff for their relentless work keeping the city safe.

Top Cop Bags Hat-Trick of Awards

Detective Inspector Simon Morgan stole the show, scooping three awards – the most on the day – for his pivotal role in cracking some of Brighton’s toughest cases.

  • Operation Pavilion: A daring probe into a man forced from his home and threatened, culminating in two suspects charged with kidnapping and aggravated burglary.
  • Operation Halifax: Tackling a spike in needle-sticking incidents across the city, Morgan’s team pieced together hours of CCTV and evidence, leading to multiple arrests and safer nightlife.
  • Operation Overstone: Bringing justice in a brutal acid attack case, putting a dangerous man behind bars for 15 years.

“It was about teamwork, dedication, professional curiosity, and innovative policing practises in all of these cases,” said D/Insp Morgan.

His efforts not only smashed complex crimes but helped introduce vital safety measures into Brighton’s nighttime economy.

Cops and Staff Go Above and Beyond

PCs John Mongan and Jordan Goddard earned commendations after bravely handling a tense domestic abuse case. When a knife-wielding suspect returned to the scene, PC Mongan defused the threat with a Taser and arrested the man, preventing what could have been a tragedy.

PCSO Sophie Hughes was praised for her patience and perseverance tracking down a serial vandal through endless CCTV footage while supporting the affected family.

Licensing Team Tackle Spiking and Safer Nights Out

Brighton’s Licensing Team, led by Inspector Michelle Palmer-Harris, bagged a certificate of merit for their crackdown on drink spiking and needle-sticking. Working hand-in-hand with venues, they’ve boosted security with measures like on-site medics, enhanced bouncer training, safe spaces, and taxi marshals to help vulnerable revellers get home safely.

Last year’s spike in needle sticking and drink spiking was tough, but our partnership with clubs and bars has made Brighton and Hove much safer for a night out,” said Kate Hancox from the Licensing Team.

Sergeant Vince Lam also received praise for his sharp leadership during operational events and handling the division’s Covid PPE logistics.

Saluting the Everyday Heroes

Brighton’s Divisional Commander Justin Burtenshaw said it best: “It is my privilege to celebrate the dedication, courage, and incredible work of our officers, staff, and volunteers. These awards represent just a snapshot of the tireless effort to keep our city safe.”

Behind every honoured officer stands a whole army of unsung heroes, working around the clock to protect Brighton and Hove’s vulnerable and bring criminals to justice.
