Isle of Wight Heroes Honoured in Police Awards Ceremony

Thirty-eight brave members of the public and police officers were celebrated at the Isle of Wight District Commander’s Awards ceremony in Newport. The prestigious event, held on April 23, recognised outstanding service and courage shown by islanders and policing staff alike.

Police and Public Join Forces to Keep Island Safe

Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney and Superintendent Sarah Jackson led the praise for 19 police constables and PCSOs, 11 civilians, and even police dog Chase for their remarkable efforts. Seven cadets also received attestation certificates, marking their key contributions to local safety.

The ceremony featured special guests including Susie Sheldon, Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, and Geoff Underwood, the island’s High Sheriff.

Detective’s Heroics After Firearms Incident

Detective Constable Adam Gamble earned a standout commendation for his role in a tense firearms incident in Sandown last October. After a man threatened a woman and officers with a BB gun disguised as a firearm, Gamble took charge of the investigation.

“DC Gamble was determined to keep ownership of the investigation, even working a 15-hour shift to secure a charge and remand,” Superintendent Jackson said. “His meticulous work helped secure justice swiftly.”

The offender was sentenced to 32 months in prison for possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear and for drink driving.

Volunteers and Cadets Shine

Chief Constable Pinkney highlighted the vital role of police cadets and volunteers, including Luke Quinton, Sophie Keller, Oliver Blackwell, Katie Lewis, and Aidan Atkins. She said:

“Our cadets are on an exciting journey. Their experience may inspire them to join the Special Constabulary or become future officers, benefiting the whole island.”

Community Spirit on Display

Superintendent Jackson summed up the event’s spirit, saying:

“These awards show how the entire community pulls together to keep Islanders safe. Many recipients helped vulnerable people or provided crucial medical aid. I’m immensely proud of every one of them.”

The Isle of Wight’s policing family continues to safeguard the island with dedication and courage, proving once more that teamwork saves lives.
