Alexa, Dashcams and GPS: The New Crimefighters in UK Courts

Digital gadgets like smart doorbells, dashcams, car GPS, and even Amazon Alexa are rewriting the rulebook on crime evidence, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) revealed today.

Tech Turning Crime Solving on Its Head

Speaking at the Westminster Policy Forum, Max Hill QC said criminal probes have leapt from traditional eyewitness testimony and door knocks to the digital age in just 15 years.

“Now, devices we live with every day — smartphones, social media, and yes, even Alexa — are key players in cracking cases,” he said. “They track locations, record incidents, and create timelines like never before.”

“Alexa has already featured in a US murder case as a crucial line of enquiry,” Max added. “This digital evolution poses both big opportunities and huge challenges for justice and society.”

GPS Evidence Nails Crossbow Killer

The DPP revealed how GPS data from a Land Rover Discovery was a game-changer in a chilling crossbow murder earlier this year.

  • The accused denied owning crossbows after the victim’s death.
  • Two weeks later, investigators seized the GPS from his partner’s burnt-out car.
  • Jaguar Land Rover’s data showed the car scouting the victim’s home the night before the murder.
  • The vehicle returned the night of the shooting, lingering 12 minutes after the crime.
  • The system recorded the boot opening and closing at key moments.

These digital breadcrumbs sealed the offender’s fate — he was convicted and handed a life sentence.

Keeping Pace with a Digital Crimewave

“Detectives from the past could only dream of today’s tech tools,” said Max Hill.

“But with these advancements come new hurdles. Machine learning and AI are now being harnessed to sift mountains of digital data quickly and reliably.”

He warned that prosecuting crimes today means blending traditional tactics with cutting-edge tech to build fair, airtight cases.

CPS Boosts Tech to Handle Evidence Flood

The Crown Prosecution Service is investing in technology to process massive evidence files efficiently while keeping personal data safe under GDPR rules.

New tools will help prosecutors pinpoint the most relevant data without drowning in information.

In 2020, crime-fighting isn’t just about boots on the ground — it’s about bytes in the cloud.
