Tragic Discovery: Toddler and Dad Found Dead in Skegness Flat
Two-year-old Bronson Battersby and his father, Kenneth Battersby, were found lifeless in their basement flat on Prince Alfred Avenue, Skegness. The grim discovery shocked the community, revealing a heartbreaking story of neglect and loss.
Dehydration Fatal for Little Bronson
Senior coroner Paul Smith in Lincoln revealed that Bronson died from severe dehydration. Bronson had been living with his father since his parents’ split in summer 2022, while his two siblings stayed with their mother. Concerned neighbours noticed Kenneth hadn’t been seen for a while and reported a strange smell coming from the flat to the police.
Father Found Dead from Suspected Heart Attack
When officers investigated, Kenneth Battersby’s body was discovered behind the living room door, believed to have died from a suspected heart attack. Tragically, Bronson was found dead between his father’s legs.
Missed Chances to Save Lives
The bodies were only found after social workers tried reaching out to the family. Despite multiple visits beginning on January 2, no one answered the door. It wasn’t until five days later, after police were called in, that the heartbreaking scene was uncovered.
Ongoing Investigation and Independent Review
Bronson’s post-mortem at Leicestershire Royal Infirmary confirmed dehydration as the cause of death. Coroner Paul Smith adjourned the inquest, highlighting an ongoing “thorough and sensitive investigation.” Meanwhile, Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Partnership has launched an independent six-month review into the case.
