Lorry Driver Caught Swiping Thousands in Red Diesel to Heat His Home
Diesel Theft Shocks Haulage Firm
A 47-year-old lorry driver has admitted stealing thousands of pounds worth of red diesel from renowned haulage company Turners (Soham) Ltd. Jason Randall, originally from New Zealand, siphoned off the fuel on 138 separate occasions between October 2018 and May 2022. The haul cost the firm between £3,384 and £7,464.
How He Used the Stolen Fuel
Randall confessed in court that he stole the diesel to power a generator heating his family’s home. According to his solicitor Jeff Smith, money was tight for Randall, who supports one of his three children on a modest income. Smith explained, “He didn’t have a particularly high income and was struggling financially.”
Light Sentence with Heavy Consequences
Carlisle Magistrates handed Randall a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. Alongside this, he must complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £500 towards compensation. Randall lost his job due to the theft and is not eligible for UK benefits.
“He is very sorry for what he did,” said his solicitor, highlighting his remorse.
