Burglar Busted by Car Tracker – Jailed for Over Three Years

Gary Bentley’s crime spree came to a screeching halt thanks to tracking data from his own car. The Tunbridge Wells burglar was slammed with a hefty three-and-a-half-year prison sentence after his Alfa Romeo provided key evidence.

Multiple Break-Ins Across Tunbridge Wells

On 20 May 2019, Bentley smashed into a home in Sandown Park, leaving an untidy mess behind and walking off with cash and jewellery. Just four days later, he hit another property on Hastings Road, Pembury, forcing open a door and making off with a bank card, watch, jewellery, and metal tankards.

He didn’t stop there. Using the stolen bank card, Bentley funded a spree on tobacco, food, and fuel at several local shops, eateries, and petrol stations.

Tracked, Caught, and Convicted

Another break-in followed on 28 May at Chalklet Lane, Pembury, where Bentley stole cash and four watches. Police nailed him after a witness caught him on their phone camera. His car’s tracker placed Bentley near every crime scene on the exact dates.

Arrested on 30 May, Bentley, 42, of Elmhurst Avenue, Pembury, faced charges including three burglaries and four counts of fraud. At Maidstone Crown Court, he pleaded guilty.

Justice Served – Tunbridge Wells Safe Again

On 6 February, Bentley was sentenced to three years and six months behind bars. Tunbridge Wells District Commander, Chief Inspector Peter Steenhuis slammed Bentley as “a prolific and brazen offender” who targeted homes in broad daylight.

“These type of crimes are quite simply devastating for victims, who arrive home to find their properties turned upside-down,” said Steenhuis. “Bentley has shown little, if any remorse for his actions. It is at least reassuring that a prison sentence will now protect residents of Tunbridge Wells from his criminal activities.”
