Grandma Killed After BMW Joyride Ends in Tragedy
Witnesses say Levi Edwards and Morgan Sansom were “driving like idiots” before disaster struck on December 20, 2019. Edwards lost control of his red BMW, smashing into 84-year-old Shirley Hope’s car on Rhigos Road, Hirwaun.
Callous Escape and Snapchat Shock
While Mrs Hope lay dying at the scene, Sansom fled in his white BMW. He briefly returned, then drove off again before the emergency services even arrived. Shocking court details reveal Sansom later snapped a photo of the wreckage and captioned it “Bad crash” on Snapchat — all while others tried to help the victim.
Guilty Pleas and Sentences Delivered
Both men admitted causing death by dangerous driving back in October. Today, Edwards, 27, was jailed for six years and banned from driving for the same period. Sansom, 23, received six years and three months behind bars and a six-year, one-month ban.
Family Speaks Out, Police Praise Efforts
“Our family thanks South Wales Police for their hard work bringing justice for our mother,” said Mrs Hope’s devastated children. “Levi Edwards and Morgan Sansom never showed any remorse for killing her. We hope their time in prison gives them plenty to reflect on.”
Detective Sergeant Lee Christer added:
“Cars in reckless hands are lethal weapons – something this tragic case sadly proved. Edwards and Sansom raced with no regard for the law or other road users. Their dangerous stunt cost a beloved grandmother her life and shattered many more. “Thanks to extensive CCTV, forensic work, and phone analysis, we proved their guilt despite their claims. Covid delays have meant a long wait, but I hope today’s sentencing brings Mrs Hope’s family some comfort.”
