Boyfriend and Mother Jailed for Murder of Toddler Kyrell Matthews
A shocking Old Bailey trial has ended with Kemar Brown, 28, and Phylesia Shirley, 24, convicted over the brutal death of little Kyrell Matthews in Thornton Heath.
Brutal Abuse Uncovered
Kyrell suffered relentless abuse before his tragic death in October 2019 at just a toddler. The court revealed the horrific scale of injuries: 41 fractured ribs from repeated attacks, torn liver from crushing blows, and deep physical trauma.
Brown, Shirley’s boyfriend, was found guilty of murdering Kyrell and causing or allowing serious harm to the child. Shirley was convicted of manslaughter after pleading guilty to allowing the death and abuse of the boy.
Life Sentences Delivered
On Friday 25 March, Brown was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years behind bars. Shirley received a 13-year prison term.
Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran said: “The injuries inflicted were truly appalling; this was not a momentary outburst but ongoing abuse. Kyrell’s death followed a final, brutal assault.”
She added, “I find it hard to understand how anyone could do this to a defenceless child. Both have rightly been held accountable.”
Harrowing Evidence
One of the most distressing parts of the case was the audio recordings found on Shirley’s phone. The chilling sounds of Kyrell being beaten over several months were played during the trial — with both adults heard abusing the toddler.
Samantha Yelland, Crown Prosecution Service, called the attacks “violent, determined, and repeated,” adding, “Kyrell would have been in immense pain prior to his death.”
Family Devastated
Kyrell’s family said: “You were robbed of the life God intended for you. We have lost the joy of watching you grow. You will live in our hearts forever.”
The boy’s mother called NHS helpline on 20 October 2019, reporting Kyrell was unwell with rolling eyes and breathing trouble. Paramedics found no heartbeat and a low body temperature, indicating he’d been unconscious for a while.
A post-mortem on 23 October revealed the full scale of abuse. Police launched a homicide investigation that led to the arrest of Brown and Shirley, who both denied the charges initially.
But the horrific recordings sealed their fate, exposing a months-long campaign of violence that claimed an innocent toddler’s life.
