Brave Security Guards Nab Dangerous Drinker at Royal Welsh Show

Two security guards have been hailed as heroes after tackling a reckless driver at the Royal Welsh Show. Gary Jones and Gareth Cummins, from Diogel Events, received Dyfed-Powys Police’s Special Recognition Award for their fearless actions that brought a dangerous offender to justice.

Heart-Stopping Incident at Young People’s Village

The daring duo were providing security at the Young People’s Village campsite during the 2019 Royal Welsh Show, working for the Young Farmers’ Club. In the early hours of 24 July, CCTV picked up a silver Volkswagen Golf behaving dangerously as it entered the campsite’s main gate.

  • The driver tried to escape, forcing Gary Jones to leap onto the bonnet to avoid injury.
  • In response, Jones punched the windscreen, smashing it and blocking the driver’s view.
  • Gareth Cummins jumped over a metal gate to back up Jones just before the car crashed into a lighting tower.
  • The pair then pulled the driver and passenger from the wreck and held them until police arrived.

Offender Sentenced After Police Award Recognition

Owner Emlyn Jones praised the pair, saying: “What they did was above and beyond what is expected of our security personnel. They put themselves at risk to protect others.”

“They did a fantastic job and it was great to see the security staff and police working together.”

The driver was later found guilty of driving while disqualified, uninsured driving, and dangerous driving. He was banned from driving and handed a custodial sentence.

Police Praise ‘Fearless’ Security Team

Temporary Chief Constable Claire Parmenter said: “Thanks to the fearless actions and sharp decision-making of both Gary and Gareth, a dangerous driver was brought to justice and removed from our roads.”

She added, “We do not know what the result of that evening would have been if the Diogel Events security team had not intervened, but we are thankful to them for keeping the public safe from any potential harm.”

The Dyfed-Powys Police Annual Awards went virtual following Covid cancellations, with more heroes to be celebrated in the coming days, including a standout staff member from the ICT Department.
